Backplate and Wing - Pros and Cons

snorkeling vs scuba diving

The backplate and wing are two separable components of a scuba harness. Each part is attached to a buoyancy compensater that creates neutral buoyancy underwater, and positive buoyancy above the surface. Each component can be separated from the other. Backplate and wings are modular systems. These are great options for divers who aren't certain which type they should get. These are the pros & cons of each.

Stainless Steel

With or without a helmet, the stainless steel backplate and wings can be made from either stainless steel. 316 stainless-steel is used for the backplate and wings and is highly resistant to saltwater. It is cut on a CNC cutter and polished manually to prevent sharp edges which can prematurely wear the strap. They can also work with single- or dual-air tanks. The stainless steel backplate and wings can be detached for easier storage.

Aluminium backplates weigh more than stainless steel. Stainless steel backplates can be used in colder areas to reduce weight. Stainless steel backplates can be adjusted to fit most tanks, unlike lead pieces. A Halcyon Dealer can provide weighting advice to determine what's appropriate for your body weight. The backplate will last longer so that you don't need it to be replaced as often.

Plastic

While the buoyancy from the plastic backplate or wing can be a problem, it can still make it easier to replace the weight belt. Jacket BCDs have pockets and weight integration. However, the backplate and wing system does not have any of these ancillary features. These components can be ordered separately. These components can be purchased separately. This article will explain the pros and disadvantages of each. It is crucial to choose the right kind of back plate that suits your needs.

Softpack harness

There are many kinds of harnesses, both for wings or backplate. The most common of these are backplates and wing BCDs. These include the necessary components such as the backplate, wing and harness. They allow for customization of the harness with many adjustable features. Softpack BCDs are ideal for technical divers, since they are made of a lightweight, flexible material and are not attached to a rigid plate.

The downside of steel backplate harnesses is their lack of adaptability. The harness cannot be used with single tanks. It's only designed for use with double tanks that have permanent bands. While the steel harness offers the most rigid option, it can be cumbersome when used for travel. This steel harness can only be used with double tanks. The steel backplate is also not recommended for use on the land. Although it can be used with single tanks by attaching adapters this is not recommended.
