Jacques Cousteau & aqua lung – A fascinating story in Scuba Tech! The original Aqua-Lung was invented during World War II. Cousteau, who was a French national, invented the underwater breathing apparatus in 1943. His inspiration came from a device perfected by Captain Yves Le Prieur in 1925. The Aqua-Lung had limited functionality at first, but the Germans demanded that automobile gas be requisitioned to use on the battlefield. Cousteau adapted an existing regulator to create the Aqua-Lung, and then invented the autonomous diving system.
After advancing scuba technology, Cousteau went on to discover underwater archeology. 1946 was the year Cousteau led the first self-contained diving operation and recovered the Roman shipwreck Mahdia. The next year, he made a British minersweeper an oceanographic research ship. Unfortunately, he was unable raise the funds to fund the expeditions. He eventually converted his passion for diving into The Silent World which became a popular film.

Emile Gagnan
1945 saw Emile Gagnan, Jacques Yves Cousteau, and Emile Gagnan patent their Aqua-Lung diving regulator. Aire Liquide in France purchased the rights and manufactured the regulator. Later, the U.S. sold it. Divers Corporation. It was the latest version of the French CG45 regulatory and was built in Canada. This regulator proved to have great success.
The Aqua-lung was initially called the Aqua-lung and was first sold in France in 1946. The Aqua-lung was later brought to America in 1952. In 1958, Air Liquide purchased U.S. Aqua Lung America was established in 1958 by Air Liquide, which purchased U.S. Divers. It eventually became a division within Air Liquide, and today is the largest dive company in the world. Aqua-lung today is a major component in nearly all Scuba Gear sets.
Emile Gaugnan and Jacques Cousteau were the two Frenchmen who invented Aqua-Lung. Both men were spies in the French Resistance during World War II. Robert Ballard pursued his passion for the sea after the war. Emile Gagnan was a Frenchman who worked for L'Air Liquide. He eventually met Emile. They both learned how to use high pressure pneumatic design while engineers. Gagnan's ideas evolved into the Aqualung, a fully automated compressed-air diving system.
